Skyping New Zealand

** Recently, Frole Island have been host to Snail & Whale – the class mascots of Room 5 in New Zealand.**

To wrap up their time with us, we decided to Skype with some students from Room 5 so that we could find out about life in each other’s countries.

Room 5 were fantastic entertainers! They performed the “Cups” song for us and taught us how to count to 10 in Maori (although we might need refreshing – I think we’ve forgotten already!)

First, the students gave us a Maths problem as it was Maths Week in New Zealand. It was a perfect question for us as it wasn’t too easy and really got us thinking outside the box! The question was similar to this: If Sam’s cat is 3 years older than her dog and the total of the pet’s age is 14, how old is Sam’s dog?
Ebony answered correctly for us – can you figure it out?

Unfortunately, shortly after our Skype call, an Earthquake measuring up to 6.2 on the Richter Scale rocked Wellington – about an hour away from our friends in Palmerston North. The aftershocks were felt across the country but luckily everyone was safe.

Big thanks to Stephen for sending out Snail & Whale and making time to Skype with us. We hope to continue learning with you and your class.

Some students were a little disappointed that we ran out of time (technical difficulties!) to ask our questions to Room 5 so we will have to organise another Skype date soon!

Skype Quiz

During the last week of Term 2, students on Frole Island competed in a quiz with 5/6CJ and 4/5P from Upper Plenty Primary School.

We met 5/6CJ and Miss Crowther when we Mystery Skyped with them earlier in the year. We really enjoyed the experience and having the chance to chat with the students afterwards. We discovered that we had something in common – we had been studying Asia all of Term 2 and they had been studying China for our Inquiry units.

When we headed over to the Theatre, students didn’t know what we were up to! UPPS made our experience very enjoyable – they played the ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ music for us so we felt like we were really on a quiz show. They even prepared advertisements for us for when we had to go to an ad break!

First, we asked the 10 questions for UPPS about China. They did very well and walked away with imaginary $10,000. Enough to buy us all dinner! Here are their questions – see how well you do!

Then, we were asked our 10 questions. We have all been looking at different countries in Asia so as a group, we had quite a lot of knowledge about a variety of countries. However, Miss Fraser picked us randomly to answer questions – so we weren’t guaranteed to answer a question about a country we had researched!

Overall, we won an imaginary $500,000! We decided we would all travel to Asia together and visit some of the countries we had researched.

After each question, the Fact Fairies from UPPS gave us extra information. The effort they put in was fantastic – they had independently researched these facts as something extra.

Mystery Skype

On Thursday afternoon, students on Frole Island participated in a Mystery Skype. Miss Fraser knew which class we were skyping with but couldn’t tell us where they were.

Mystery Skyping is where two classes come together without knowing which school or where in the world the other class is. Each class takes turns to ask closed questions to narrow down the location of the other class. If you ask a question and receive a ‘No’ response, then it is the other class’ turn to ask a question.

Before we skyped, we talked about the general types of questions we could ask to narrow down the other class’ location. We decided the the best way to firstly narrow it down was to ask “Are you in the Southern hemisphere?”

Neve & Steph started by greeting the other class. Steph tossed a coin to determine who would ask the first question – they won.

There are different roles for everyone in the class so that we can all participate. Here is a list of the roles we used and what their jobs were:

  • Greeters: Students greet the other class and welcome them to our Mystery Skype session. They are in charge of helping determine who will ask the first question.
  • Inquirers: Students asking the questions of the other class to narrow down their location
  • Question Answerers: Must know about where we live to be able to answer the questions of the other class
  • Question Keepers: Students in charge of recording each question that is asked as well as the response.
  • Google Mappers: Students use Google Maps to search based upon the clues they are given. They use Google Maps to narrow the location of the other class. They then share this information to assist with creating new questions to ask
  • Runners: In charge of running between all the other jobs. They share the information that is gathered as well as bring questions to the inquirers.  They help to keep order so that everybody is not yelling across the room.
  • Logical Reasoners: Use information to try to eliminate states and countries.
  • Clue Keepers: Use a map to mark down important information. They can colour, cross out and make marks on the map to help narrow down the choices and formulate new questions.
  • Atlas: Students use a traditional atlas to help find the location.
  • Photographers: Students take pictures/video the event so it can be posted online later.

Next time, we will get to swap roles. We really enjoyed learning this way. We got to practise our skills in communication, geography, collaboration and ICT.

Unfortuantely, they guessed which school we were at first. It only took us 2 more questions to find out that they were Upper Plenty Primary School!

After we had guessed, we had the opportunity to ask questions of each other. We enjoyed finding out more about their school. We found out that their integrated studies unit is Asia too!
